Wisdom Teeth Q & A

Dobson Warner Dentistry

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third and final set of molars. They usually erupt in your late teens and often come in out of alignment. Unfortunately, wisdom teeth often reside under your gum’s surface and aren’t even noticed until they become a problem.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth are often removed for a variety of important reasons. They:

  • Have an unpredictable growth pattern
  • Cause numerous oral problems like swelling, infection, tenderness, and pain
  • Contribute to gum disease and dental decay
  • Can damage nearby teeth
  • May harm the structure of the jaw bone
  • Can cause cyst growth in the jaw bone or gums
  • Create sinus issues
  • Inflame your gums

During your consultation with Dr. Trang, he’ll evaluate your mouth, take a comprehensive set of X-rays, and determine if your wisdom teeth need to come out.

How are wisdom teeth removed?

Dr. Trang determines the method of extraction based on the location of your wisdom teeth and how far along they are in the development process. Occasionally, wisdom teeth are impacted and require specialized surgery.

Once Dr. Trang determines where your wisdom teeth are and how they’re growing, he customizes an extraction plan. In general, wisdom teeth removal is an outpatient procedure. You’ll be placed under local, sedation, or general anesthesia so that you won’t feel or remember anything from the surgery.

Dr. Trang uses the following steps to remove your wisdom teeth. He:

  • Makes an incision in your gums to reveal the tooth and bone
  • Removes any bone that prevents access to the tooth
  • Extracts the tooth
  • Thoroughly cleans the surgical site to remove bacteria and debris
  • Sutures the wound closed
  • Helps clot the blood flow with gauze

No matter what type of sedation Dr. Trang uses, you’ll need someone to attend the procedure with you so they can drive you home.

What can I expect after removal of my wisdom teeth?

You can expect some residual swelling, bruising, and bleeding after the surgery. The blood flow may be quite heavy the first few hours, but it will taper off quickly. You’re likely to have some pain, so Dr. Trang prescribes some pain medications to help you control it.

Within a few days, you’ll be feeling yourself again and you can resume normal activities.
